Although we only celebrate Earth Day once a year, Fab Habitat believes that taking care of our planet is a lifelong commitment! From the beginning, sustainability has been at the forefront of our philosophy—so today (and every day) we honor that.
Our goal has always been to create products that are good for the home and even better for the planet. The primary materials we use to make our goods are recycled plastic, recycled cotton, all-natural coir, and natural jute—resulting in beautiful rugs that are durable, soft, and most importantly: eco-friendly. Since starting Fab Habitat in 2009, we’ve recycled thousands of pounds of used cotton, plastic bottles, and plastic containers—taking things that normally would’ve gone to waste in a landfill and literally giving them a new life! Here are just a few ways we do that:
Recycled Plastic Rugs
Our Polypropylene rugs are made from recycled food and medicine grade containers. The plastic is melted into granules, made into tubes, and then woven into a smooth, lightweight rug. (Neat, huh?!)
Recycled Polyester (PET) Rugs
Our Recycled Polyester (PET) rugs are typically made from recycled soda bottles. They’re melted down, made into yarn, and then sewn into soft, wool-like rugs.
Recycled Cotton Rugs
Scraps of unwanted fabric are shredded down to fibers and dyed with sustainable dyes. Those fibers are then re-spun into yarn and sewn into durable, stain-resistant rugs!
Coir Doormats
Coir is a natural fiber made from discarded coconut husks. (Yep, you read that right: coconuts!) The husk is extracted, twisted into a thick yarn, then hardwoven with raw coir to create beautiful doormats.
Jute Rugs
Jute is a fiber made from fast-growing plants—and these plants require less fertilizer, herbicide, and pesticides than cotton. Jute stems are bundled together, immersed in water, twisted and dyed into rope, and then woven to create eco-friendly (and stylish) rugs.
We hope that this Earth Day serves as a reminder that your decisions—whether big or small—can make an impact on our planet. And something as simple as choosing a Fab Habitat rug for your home can have positive, long-lasting effects!
