From Plastic to Rug

Since we started Fab Habitat, we’ve recycled millions of bottles and plastic containers, turning them from trash to rug.

Here’s How It Works

There are two types of recycled plastics that we use to manufacture our product. Polypropylene tubes and PET, a yarn that feels as soft as cotton.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene rugs are made from premium food grade plastics. These rugs are portable, light and feel smooth while being truly hard-wearing , washable and weather resistant.

Step 1

Recycled food and medicine grade containers are shredded into pieces

Step 2

Pieces mixed with coloring are melted into granules

Step 3

Colored granules are made into tubes

Step 4

Tubes are weaved into a rug

PET

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is a plastic more commonly found in water bottles. You might be thinking that our PET plastic rugs and accessories can’t possibly be plush like other rugs but they feel just as soft as cotton rugs. These stain resistant hand-woven rugs have a softer wool-like feel than Polypropelene, which makes them perfect for outdoors and any high traffic indoor setting.

Recycled Cotton

Since we started Fab Habitat, we’ve recycled thousands of pounds of used cotton, giving fast fashion a second life.

Soft Like Your Favorite T-Shirt

Our recycled cotton rugs are sourced from cut-offs, scraps and leftovers from the clothing industry that would’ve normally gone to waste. We only use natural fiber so that at the end of your rug’s lifecycle, it will degrade gracefully back into the earth.

How It Works

Step 1

We source unwanted fabric scraps from the clothing industry

Step 2

We shred the fabrics down to fibers and dye them with sustainable dyes.

Step 3

Fibers are re-spun into yarn

Step 4

Yarn is spun, cut and sewn into a soft, durable and stain resistant rug

All-Natural Coir

About 50 billion coconuts fall from trees annually. The husks and shells are typically discarded. We take these discarded husks and turn them into coir - a strong, yet biodegradable fiber.

Why Coir?

There are many reasons why we love coir! Coir is one of the thickest, most durable natural fibers out there. It consumes a lot less resources to produce than cotton and synthetic fibers. It also has the added benefits of being naturally anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, relatively waterproof and resistant to salt water. making it a great addition to your home!
