1. Determine the Size
Perhaps one of the most challenging parts about picking out a rug is figuring out what size to order. It’s important to make sure that no matter what room you’re in, the rug is not too large or too small—it’s just right. A good rule of thumb is to make sure the front legs of all your furniture are sitting on the rug. If you have a super large space to fill, we recommend measuring the room and then picking a rug that’s about two feet shorter than the perimeter.
Pro Tip: To get a sense of what the rug will look like before you order, try using a measuring tape and painter’s tape to outline the shape and size of the rug in your room. It’ll give you a good idea of how the rug will fit without having to commit yet!
2. Determine the Style
The next step in picking out the perfect rug is determining what style and colors you’re drawn to. Do you want something nice and neutral? Something bright and bold? Something with a pop of color? We have so many amazing styles and designs to choose from, there’s sure to be something for everyone! One thing to consider is the surrounding decor and furniture in the space. If you have a bold piece of furniture, you might want to soften up the look with a neutral rug. If you have mostly neutral pieces, it’s a great opportunity to bring in a bolder rug. Whatever you decide, your rug should be a piece that grounds the space and makes it feel more complete.
3. Determine the Material
Once you have an idea of the style you’d like in a rug, the next step is determining what type of material to go for. At Fab Habitat, we have rugs made out of recycled cotton, jute, wool, and PET (a polyester fiber made from recycled water bottles!). Each of them are great in their own ways, so it really depends on what type of material you’re drawn to the most.
